Paid Family Leave Benefits is funded through mandatory employee payroll deductions. The Paid Family Leave Program provides up to six weeks of supplemental benefits for workers who have to take time off to take care of a seriously ill family member (parent, spouse, child, parent-in-law, life partner, grandparent, grandchild or sibling) or to bond with a new baby or fostered or adopted children.
To receive Paid Family Leave (PFL) benefits, you must be a full-time or part-time employee, and you must meet other eligibility requirements. The amount of PFL benefits you get will be a certain percentage of your previous weekly earnings. You may receive PFL benefits for up to six weeks within any 12-month period. This is not dependent on the reason for taking time off, and you do not have to take the time all at once. If you are a parent who is taking time off to bond with a child, then you will only be eligible for PFL benefits during the first year after the birth, foster care placement or adoption.
You can apply for Paid Family Leave Benefits by filling out the Claim for Paid Family Leave (PFL) Benefits (DE 2501F) form. You may file the application online or by mail. Your application must include relevant information showing your relationship with your new child or the other person for whom you are caring. For caregiving claims, you must also provide a medical certificate from your relative’s physician. You will usually receive your benefits within 14 days of submitting your PFL application.
